Atticus Finch Injustice

No matter where or who one may be, they are always learning something, either about themselves or about the environment around them. In Harper Lee’s novel titled To Kill a Mockingbird, the main characters Jem and Scout learn about themselves and their surroundings. As the story develops, one may learn multiple life lessons including those of being courageous, categorization of people and how they have been judged, and how injustice occurs.
During the story, characters show how one can be courageous through multiple events. Atticus is one of the characters that shows a good amount of courage, especially through the trial. Atticus Finch is an extremely fair lawyer as he brings justice to the Tom Robinson case. Scout tells Atticus he must be wrong to defend a black man because others said he was wrong. Atticus goes on to say “They’re certainly entitled to think that… The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience” (105). This shows Atticus does not need anyone to tell him that majority is always right, he wants to have a just opinion rather than a majority opinion. Another example of justice is when Atticus in the courtroom was justifying Tom and told everyone that Mayella is the one who is guilty. Atticus told everyone “I say guilt, gentlemen, because it was guilt that motivated her… She tried to put the evidence of her offense away from her…” (203). This shows an enormous injustice to have Tom on trial and convicted for something he did not do. Three examples that teach the reader about these themes are when Atticus shows courage by defending Tom Robinson, another one is when Mr. Ewell categorizes Tom in the trial, and finally the injustice of Tom’s trial as he is convicted of committing a crime.
