Easton Mahnks Fraser English 9, Period 1 8 March 2024 As we Grow Older A Hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Some people who read the story “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. Think that Atticus Finch is a hero but Christopher Metress thinks otherwise in his article “The Rise and Fall of Atticus Finch” Metress thinks Atticus is not a hero. Metress is correct when he states Atticus does this for his own well being, he doesn’t use his power for change, and he tries to eliminate racism but can’t. Metress is right when he shows by quoting Phelps, showing that Atticus doesn’t try to break the color barrier. Metress shows us that he barely attempts to erase the color barrier. …show more content…
Atticus tries to attempt to erase the color barrier, but can’t even do it in his own kids and town. Also, when Jem is talking to Scout Jem brings up different “types of folks” “There are four kinds of folks in this world: the ordinary kind like us and then theres the Cunninghams, the kind like the Ewells and then the Negros” (Lee 302). Atticus kids can’t even get past the color barrier so how are the Ewells or the rest of the town supposed to? Phelps is right because Atticus doesn’t even teach his kids not to be racist or judgmental, nonetheless the town. Freedman has a point when he doesn’t use his power for change.
