How do the choices you make affect the people around you? August Wilson’s “Fences” portrays Troy as a tragic figure who goes from being respected by his family to being an outcast among them. He makes choices that makes himself happy, but in doing this distances himself from his family. He doesn’t seem to care about what the people around him are going through, as long as he is happy. Wilson portrays Troy as tragic figure that continually makes bad decisions, and as a villain through the choices he makes for himself and for his family. Troy displays his bad choices when he decides to have a kid with Alberta. He knows that seeing Alberta is the wrong thing to do, but he continues to do it because he only cares about himself. He doesn’t care that Gabe’s career is over and he will never be able to work again, he only cares that he has a nice place to build a house and live. He doesn’t seem to care that his own brother was suffering, he only cares that he has everything that he needs and it doesn’t matter what anyone else has as long as he is happy. Troy’s misuse of Gabe’s money shows that he has no regard for anyone else’s problems as long as he has none. In conclusion, Wilson’s Fences portrays Troy as a tragic figure and a villain, and proves it through the examples of Troy’s relationship with Alberta and having a child, Troy’s destruction of Cory’s football career, and Troy’s taking of Gabe’s money from the army to build a house for himself. These examples accurately portray Troy because they show how little he cares for his family and his children.
