“Fences” by August Wilson, is a great play that was written in a time of great oppression against African American, and racial discrimination was very notorious. African Americans were treated different and with no equality as well. “Fences” by August Wilson started with the first act back in 1957, when a little bit of hope for the Africans descendants slaves emerged. “By 1957, the hard-won victories of the European immigrants had solidified the industrial might of America” (1557). Even though racial discrimination started slowly changing by this time, there was still great oppression against blacks. When Troy tried to make it to the major leagues he is discriminated for being a colored man, and explains how now after years he tried if a “negro” was in the major league it was just to sit on the benches, which by the events of what he is talking about let you know he tried before 1947 when Jackie Robinson who was the first African American that made it to the major leagues. “They got lots of colored boys playing ball now. Baseball and football” (1562). To what Bono his friend added. “You right about that, Rose. Times have changed, Troy. You just come along too early” (1562). Meaning that the previous years were even harder for colored people to even have an opportunity to make it to major leagues. When Troy tried to get in major leagues he was rejected because of his colored, this happened before the war around 1939 to 1945. “Times have changed since you was playing baseball, Troy. That was before the war. Time have changed a lot since then” (1562). Later on, Troy successfully obtain a better job opportunity, becoming the first colored man to be a driver that was only done by white people. “You daddy got a promotion on the rubbish. He’s gonna be the first colored driver”
