Some students may not know it, but their advisors are one of the most important people that they will come into contact with at AUM. We should make it a priority to visit our advisors regularly to make sure that we are on the right track for our major. This month I had an appointment with Mrs. Kris Conner, advisor of School of Nursing. I didn’t know how important it was to talk to my advisor until our interview. The following is a conversation between Mrs. Konner and I.
Tia: How can I best prepare for an advising session with you before I come in?
Mrs. Conner: There are two things I recommend. One is to write down any questions you may have. It’s easy to get in here and forget what it is you wanted to ask. Second thing is to be aware of your plan of study; which is why we work out

Mrs. Conner: For questions, email is always the fastest and for advising, through advisor track. I make all my appointments through there so I don’t double book.
Tia: What advice would you have for me to help me be successful at AUM?
Mrs. Conner: Ask for help when you need it. AUM has two free tutoring centers. We have the Warhawk Academic Success Center that helps with student academic success. We have a fantastic counselling center. We have a career development center. There are a lot of resources on campus that are free to students; but they’re not going to come to you and ask do you need help, you have to go to them. So, ask for help.
Tia: What is the most common mistake you see students making and what advice would you give them to avoid the mistake?
Mrs. Conner: Honestly, I think the most common mistake I see is students not asking for help. They get in trouble and don’t understand something, then try to do it all on their own and end up being unsuccessful in a class
