The Famous Pie I visited Austin’s coffee on a Sunday night, hoping to taste their famous pie. As you can see on the right is a picture of their famous peanut butter pie. Mile high, crowned with whipped cream, dusted with powdered sugar and colossal size is perfect for sharing, this mini-mountain of peanut-buttery exquisiteness has its own cult following, a sub-culture within the community that is Austin’s. And it was all concocted by mishap, said Austin’s owner Sean Moore. That Sunday night I met with Sean Moore, whenever I walk through the back door and he’s working, he always greets me with a smile. He even remembers me from other past times I have visited the coffee shop. As I sit on the booth and greet Sean, I ask him, “How did the pie come into existence?” Sean gave a chuckle and said, “Well… it was all an accident really. I was making a pie for a restaurant I worked for at the time and I grabbed the wrong ingredient from the shelf. By the time I noticed, it was too late. In an attempt to cover up the mistake, I added peanut butter and it just sort of worked.” Sean says he bought the coffee shop around 2004, and then later on decided to start selling the pie, perfecting it over the years to become the fluffy, addictive confection that it is today. “The first pie sold out immediately and I knew I had something.” “Like the shop, it defies logic,” Moore said.
