Australia is the smallest continent, but the sixth largest country in the world. Some people get Australia confused of whether it is an island, continent or country. The reason Australia is not an island, but a continent is because it sits on its own tectonic plate and does not share a continental shift with Asia. Australia is the continent between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is south of Asia, southeast of Africa and northeast of Antarctica. Australia is divided into two territories, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory, and is divided into six states including, New South Wales which has the capitol Canberra, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Although, it is at threat, because of the diffusion of pop culture in countries surrounding it. However, to keep the folk culture going, there are festivals once a year that are 5 days long, where people come and share their way of folk culture to inspire others as well and to keep Australian folk music, art and the folk way of living. Taboos are customs that are forbidden in a certain area. An example of taboos in Australia are horse meat and organ meat. Horse meat is forbidden in the Christian religion, and with majority of Australians being apart of Christianity, it only makes sense. With organ meat, it simply makes Australians disturbed and sick to their stomach. Some more customs in Australia being that they wear trousers, leather boots and light colored clothing because of the warmer weather. They often take off their shoes before entering a home, don’t put their feet on the furniture. Also, smoking is not encouraged in any way, in fact, it is very discouraged. When meeting another person shake their right hand, and say “G’day mate” instead of good day. An example of something not to do is holding up your index and middle finger because it means “up yours”.
