Toward the end of gym class, a fellow student broke into a tantrum. The entire class turned to see flailing arms and legs. Everyone seemed uncomfortable. I, however, was inexplicably drawn to him. I approached the screaming boy and held out my hand, inviting him to stand in line with me. He stopped screaming, took my hand, and stood quietly with me, his face gleaming. I felt a warm sense of accomplishment at having calmed my new friend. I wondered what would make a first grader act out in such a way. I saw he was different from me. My goal to figure out why we were so different began at that moment.

A “peer mentoring program” at my high school allowed me to interact with students with special needs. I take tremendous pride in my friendship with another non-verbal boy with autism. To this day, we go bowling, swimming, and to amusement parks. One day I picked him up to go swimming. He was glowing with happiness and laughter. When I asked what was so amusing, he responded with one word: happy. I am greatly satisfied knowing that our time together has brightened his life and the life of his whole family.

My profound passion for assisting those with special needs took on a new direction as I discovered new ways to help. When I took my first biology class as a junior in high school, I began to realize my potential to help those with special needs in a biological fashion. Fascinated by genetics and biomedical technology, I considered my potential to understand, treat, and possibly prevent disabilities.
