While I have belonged to various communities throughout my life, there is one that stands out: being a member of the Oriole Army. This community began my sophomore year as a football game theme and has grown since. It’s composed of every student and faculty member of Avon High School and acts as our identity when it comes to spirit and being a family. The Oriole Army has banded together to complete various events like the Avon High School Lip Dubs. While there are two lip dubs that were created during my high school career, the one completed last April inspired my life.
This lip dub portrayed the diversity of Avon. Every club, sports team, and organization is represented in this lib dub. As the weeks passed after this video was posted I began to think of how it could be applied to my future or even the world now. This idea of unity and acceptance is becoming difficult in America. Throughout the past year, I believe it has been especially hard for America to unite as a “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” Whether it was the election, racial tension, or the new immigration plan President Trump wants to initiate, America is losing sight of basic values for which this country has been founded. Across the world, people would risk their lives to come to this country. America should be a melting pot full of new innovations and ideas. America should be about allowing people to accomplish their dreams. America should be the land of the free, but that is slowly becoming more limited. Americans need to realize that opinions can differ because there is never a right or wrong answer. Instead of focusing on our differences, we need support each other especially in times of need. This is exactly what I viewed in the lip dub.
