The simple writing that the author uses throughout the entire book gives the reader a feeling of deeper emotion. “Aziza. It’s Lovely” “So is she. You’ll see” “I’ll count the minutes” (304) it’s so very simple in wording, there are no long spiels of love and adoration, just a couple sentences to say “I’ll always be looking forward to seeing her” the daughter that they couldn’t share until now. It’s consistent throughout the writers whole piece, even in the scenes where there is no love, “I asked you a question, boy” Zalmai swallowed. His gaze kept shifting. “I was upstairs, playing with Mariam.” “And your mother?” (304) the fear is easily palpable in the boy, Zalmai, as his father interrogates him and it is easily seen in a few choice words. For example the text I chose it starts with her “husbands” innterogation after her child opened his mouth, before suddenly switching to a very loving scene between Laila and her childhood lover, Tariq, and their connection and love for their now known and shared child Aziza. Even though the moments are placed opposite to how the timeline should be, it gives the story a very interesting appeal in that it keeps moments from it’s own readers by changing it up which can give it an addicting nature in wanting to know if that was actually the whole story or if he’s hidden something in the
