In this week´s lab, I had to measure baking soda and vinegar before and after they reacted with each other. My question was, ¨Will the mass of the baking soda and vinegar change after they react with each other?” Combining vinegar and baking soda together is a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction is when two or more substances chemically combine together to form one or more completely different substances. I had two separate hypotheses for this lab. If I weigh the baking soda and vinegar before they react with each other, then the mass won’t be affected. If I weigh the baking soda and vinegar after they react, then the mass will increase. In this lab, there was an independent and dependent variable, and a constant. The independent variable is the vinegar and baking soda before and after they react with each other. The dependent variable is the mass of the vinegar and baking soda. There was no control group in this lab. …show more content…
The materials I used in this lab were wax paper, 5 grams of baking soda, a triple beam balance, a canister, vinegar, baking soda, a measuring cup, and a sealable plastic bag. The first step in this lab is to weigh the wax paper and then add 5 grams of baking soda onto the wax paper. After I weighed 5 grams of baking soda, I placed into a sealable plastic bag. Next, I measured 5 mL of vinegar using a measuring cup and poured it into a plastic canister. Carefully, I then placed the canister of vinegar in the plastic bag, squeezed the air out of the bag, and sealed it tightly. Using the triple beam balance, I measured the mass of the bag and the materials inside of it. Keeping the plastic bag closed, I opened the canister to mix the vinegar with the baking soda. When I did this, the mixture of the vinegar and baking soda began to bubble. When the reaction stopped, I measured the mass of the plastic bag and its
