During the years general and dictator Francisco Franco ruled over spain, he “repressed the culture and language of Spain’s Basque and Catalan regions, censured the media and otherwise exert absolute control over the country” (History). Under a dictatorship, the power promoted in one person, can influence the actions of others. In the film “ Balada de Triste Trompeta”, allegory of fascist Francisco Franco and the republic, is represented through both the antagonist and protagonist; throughout the film symbols are presented of how the war has affected the people of spain.

Sergio has a hold of the circus, the way a dictator in control of a country. “A "big six" constellation of personality disorders that may commonly reflect the personalities of dictators more generally: sadistic, antisocial, paranoid, narcissistic, schizoid, and schizotypal” (Psych) Some of the presented characteristics and are seen through his relationship with Natalie. The link between physical abuse and sexual arousal is clearly apparent. Sergio’s paranoia is expressed in his jealousy of Natalie being with another man. However he is not very antisocial, he enjoys being followed by a mindless crowd that laughs at a snap of a finger. Being the happy clown is the prominent job in the circus, he is the main attraction responsible for children coming to the circus, he is a narcissist in nature. Since these characteristics are greatly exaggerated in Sergio, he is a perfect symbolic figure of a fascist dictator. “Balada de Triste Trompeta” is a fast pace satirical film that is deeply rooted in the Spanish civil war.
