Baldwin relates the story of his relationship with his father to the story of the relationship between black and white America by making his own comparison to the feelings that he has to his father and the hatred that the whites have to the blacks. His father grew up when the blacks were freed from slavery, and his father developed this hatred from the cruel minds of the whites and blacks. This cruelty developed into more than Baldwin could imagine because it spread from his father to his family and then to Baldwin himself. Baldwin didn’t want any part of this cruelty that was bestowed before him and be basically took it all. When Baldwin saw this happening to himself he remembered how he was as a child, he had white friends and white teachers
