Harry Belafonte, a Jamaican-American musician, actor and human rights activist joined the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s. Through his work, he became a close friend and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was publically known to organize demonstrations, he raised money and even donated from his personal earnings. In 1959 he became the first African American to win a Tony Award as the Best Supporting Actor (Musical) for “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac”. As he worked tirelessly to achieve equality, he completed his first album in 1956 which he ironically named Calypso. This album sold over one-million copies. The album is best known for the “Day-O” song or otherwise known as the “Banana Boat Song.”
