Should Marijuana Be Taken Off the NBA’s Banned Substance List?
Many will argue over whether the NBA should or should not remove marijuana from the banned substance list. Controversy on the subject has plagued the league for several years. Certain players, administrators, and commissioners continuously feud over this ongoing dilemma. Although many will argue the substance should be allowed, marijuana should remain on the banned substance list.
People have different viewpoints on the subject, but both sides will have their perspective compared and contrasted. Marijuana is looked down upon by many people. As this drug becomes legal in more and more states, the chances of the NBA taking this substance …show more content…
Marijuana is the highest abused drug in the United States (Cnbc). While the properties of this drug can help a player, many NBA players can easily begin to abuse the substance. Abusing marijuana can lead to serious cardiovascular problems, high risk of lung infections, and cause a decrease in motivation (Marijuana). If this drug was taken off the banned substance list, several players around the league would begin to get discouraged about their career, and make drastic changes in their life due to marijuana abuse. Not only is substance abuse a serious issue, the conflict of drug-related crime is likely to occur. Marijuana is a highly addictive drug, and it does very serious things to a human being. As a player may become addicted to the substance, he will begin to do desperate things in order to please his needs. Len Bias was a young college player who was a rising star in the state of Maryland. As Len continued to break all kinds of records, people across the country were comparing this kid to Michael Jordan. The exciting moment of the NBA draft had finally approached Len, and he was drafted #2 overall. The very next day after he was drafted, Len Bias tragically died due to a drug overdose in 1986. Many say it was of cocaine intoxication, and others say he was abusing marijuana, and died of another cause.
