The Roman Dark Age was thought of as a period of violence, disease, and famine (Wells xi). Peter S. Wells however, provides information through archaeology describing a different perspective of the Dark Age. Wells uses unbiased evidence and findings to demonstrate his interpretation of the Dark Age in the book Barbarians To Angels: The Dark Ages Reconsidered. Wells describes how society bases the Dark Ages solely on writings and documents survived throughout past centuries (4). He explains that the Dark age is not named as such because of turmoil, but due to limited and biased information documented on the era of the Dark Ages (Wells 5). Investigations describe how port settled commercial centers and shipping facilities thrived during the eighth century (Wells 127). The excavated graves used to aid Wells in confirming his arguments is a major breakthrough in history (48). He has an interesting perspective on luxury goods found in graves, and and how they were traded from faraway lands during the era of the Dark Ages, verifying trade was still on the rise (Wells 162). He also highly demonstrates how goods distributed throughout Europe, were shipped to as far away as Britain and Denmark (Wells 160).
