Barbie Doll Poem Analysis

For this paper I am going to go analyze two poems and convince the reader why my perspective on the poem is also important to get a greater understanding of the readings. To convince the reader, I am going to further analyze at least three elements of each poem to back up my perspective of each poem with supporting details. I strongly believe that women face a lot of struggle and society has set up a rubric that they have to follow and adapt to otherwise society is going to suck them in. Poems that really amazed me were “Leaving the Motel” by W.D. Snodgrass, “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy. Both, these poems really were an eye opener to me, I get the fact that both these poems were written in the late 1970’s but you’d think that in 21st century things would’ve changed and women would finally have a place in society. I want to use these poems to show how the struggles women faced back then are the same struggles women face today. For each poem I would like to show my interpretive views on tone, theme, and visual imagery of each poem. In “Marks” I felt the tone of this poem is very mellow and sad. This poem is basically talking about a girl’s life cycle. Right as the girl was born she was given those dolls that represent what society is going to want her to be when she grows up. When the girl was in school someone called her fat and which then a whole chain of events, she started seeing all the insecurities inside her that society was not going to accept. “She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty, exercise, diet, smile and wheedle” (12-15).
