Barbie Doll's Negative Effects On Young Girls

The thought of Barbie as a real woman seemed like a possibility, yet if she were a real twenty year old, she would be a negative role model for the body standard. Starting with the front fact that the actual measurements of a full sized human Barbie would be consequential to her health. Many had argued that the doll’s unrealistic body had damaging effects on young girls. If Barbie were to be real then she would have inhuman body measurements “with six inch ankles, a child’s size three foot, and top heavy distribution, Barbie would have to walk on all fours”(Norton et al) meaning she could not even stand straight on her feet since she would be so top heavy. Barbie Doll Syndrome is “the drive, often in adolescent girls, to attain impossible standards of beauty, projected by Mattel's Barbie doll and the media, resulting in failure and frustration, issues related to body image, eating disorders, and self image” (Segen’s Medical Dictionary). Professionals think Barbie’s body impact on girls, suggests that the doll does trigger eating disorders. However it would be more accurate to say she is a trigger to girls prone to eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia (Stone).One psychiatrist wrote that “Barbie has been the number one most destructive force on the self-image of women all over the globe” (Stone 6). Later saying that little girls who own Barbies, grow up believing they are not pretty or lovable enough because they do not look like her (Stone 6). That self doubt could lead to the little girl obtaining the syndrome. Which could lead to negative effects later in life.
