Stories about heroes have perplexed the human race for centuries. The first story regarding a larger than life hero was none other than Beowulf. History’s oldest epic poem, Beowulf, displays a fearless, brave, and confident hero who is adored across the globe. He is seen countless of times in various works of literature and has been adapted into other films and novels. Beowulf is seen as a boastful, strong, and cunning man who fights the evil bloodthirsty beast, Grendel. In comparison to another hero popular in the DC Comics universe; Batman, who fights against evil in the city of Gotham. Both Beowulf and Batman display similarities and differences in character, appearances, as well as their personal drive.

In the epic, Beowulf uses a boat to travel the wide open sea in order to reach Hrothgar’s land. The poem says, “ Then they sailed, set their ship out on the waves, under the cliffs…”(Raffel, Chapter 3). Beowulf and his men traveled great lengths to find and face death straight in the eyes. However, Batman travels land and sea with his Batmobile, Bat-cycle, Bat-Jet, etc.Which takes a normal modern day object and give them the Bat look, so you knew it was Batman coming to save the day. In the No.33 of the Detective Comics published November 1939, Batman uses his “Bat-Plane” to destroy the Dirigible that the evil mastermind, Kruger, used to kill thousands of innocent citizens of Gotham. In order to stop Kruger from using his contraption to hurt more people, he crashes the Bat-Plane straight into it (Thomas, 29). Batman’s means of transportation was not like the viking type of ship used by Beowulf to transport all fourteen Geats. They had two very different styles and customs, plus a huge time difference to account for the technological advancements. Secondly, Beowulf and Batman differ in appearance because of the time time gap they had different clothing styles. The Epic describes Beowulf taking off his, “ mail shirt, his helmet, his sword...”, before entering the great halls of Herot. This is in complete contrast from Batman's, “acrobat- style costume” (Thomas 6). Where later on the audience learns that his costume is bullet proof because he is a regular human who wants to contribute to his city of Gotham of high crime, that seems to never end. His dark costume is fitted with a bright yellow utility belt to hold all of his tools and gadgets to aid in him in his cases at hand.
