“Have you ladies practiced passing you baton yet?” Coach questioned. “Not with her,” Evelina confessed, pointing to me. “You can practice the transition over there, out of the way,” Coach told us, motioning us to the edge of the track. My relay team gathered on the grass, in the order we would be running; Anise, Me, Bella, then Evelina. “Alright,” Anise instructed me. “Put your hand out like this,” I copied her hand position. “I’ll run up to you and yell ‘stick’, okay? I nodded in approval. She ran up to me, baton resting tightly in her hand. The practice transition was smooth, and I gripped the baton as I approached Bella, yelling for her to go. “Sprint!” I shouted. She ran. I had done it. My chest cramped and I thought for sure that my heart was going to stop! Luckily, I didn’t die that day. In fact, I got our relay team from second-to-last place to fourth place. My arms and legs were shaking and my smile grew as the reality of what had just happened sunk in. Bella and Evelina ran, but I didn't see them. I was too focused on my run. After the full race was over and I relaxed, Coach told me something I will never forget. I had only been there to fill in as a runner in the relay, but, it appeared that I was going to be doing more than
