The battle of Vicksburg began May 18th, 1863 and ended July 4th, 1863 in Warren County, Mississippi. The battle was fought by Union general Ulysses S. Grant and the army of Tennessee against the Confederate general John C. Pemberton and the army of Vicksburg. The battle resulted in 4,910 casualties from the Union, 32, 492 casualties from the Confederacy, and 37,402 total casualties. The battle was fought in Warren County near the Mississippi river. The total forces engaged were 110,000 but General Grant’s troops outnumbered Pemberton’s troops by about 44,000 men. Pemberton had 33,000 men to begin with and Grant had 77,000. Ulysses S.
