In his interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann emphasizes the hyperbolic emotion and dramatics of the play. As a director he creates chaos through music, filming and dialogue and in doing this sets the stage for a superficial love between Romeo and Juliet. Amidst chaos, the two characters fall madly in love with the idea of love itself and through Luhrmann's directions they adopt the masks of classical lovers. By focusing on the facades of love as well as the dramatization of scenes, Luhrmann produces an extremely climactic version of Romeo and Juliet.

After an intense police chase Romeo locks himself in the Capulet's tomb and walks down the ilse lined with crosses towards Juliet. This scene a perfect parallel to their marriage since it is the second time Romeo walked down the ilse towards her, once at the beginning of their love and once at the end. The over climactic scene shows that he is really only in love with idea of love because he is heartbroken over the idea that their love is over and that he can no longer wear the facade of a young lover.
