“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” (Lapierre). High school security guards should have the right to carry firearms while on duty. “Since 1980 approximately 270 people have been killed in school shootings,” (slate.com). However, few people are willing to prevent these mass murders from occurring in today’s school systems. Having guns on school campuses will offer protection to students and faculty, enforce the security on school campuses, and allow parents to feel comfortable while their child attends school. As stated on thinkprogress.org, ABC News reported thirty-one school shootings in the United States since Columbine in 1999, where thirteen innocent people were massacred. “All Utah educators have been able to carry concealed weapons to work for the past twelve years, all in which there have been no accidents or shootings in the schools,” (standfordreview.org). Even though many people state that weapons increase crime rates, studies show that places that allow concealed guns to be carried have a much lower crime rate than places that do not allow weapons on the premises. For example, James Holmes, the suspect of a mass shooting in Colorado, traveled twenty minutes away from his apartment (passing seven theaters that allowed concealed weapons to be carried) to reach a theater that had a strict ‘No Weapons’ policy to find susceptible victims. Although this happened in a theater, there would be similar results within a school shooting. After all, why would a suspect risk his life before he even began to fulfill his plan? This proves that places with armed security guards are less likely to become victims in shootings. Schools need enforced security to be able to offer the students a safe learning environment, and armed guards offer just
