In the novel Beastly by Alex Flinn, the main conflict grows and develops immensely. Kyle Kingsbury starts off as a narcissistic, conceited, judgmental and arrogant high school student who lives in New York. He values appearance and money over everything else. He has an insanely rich father which gives him many advantages in life. Although many people praise Kyle, a girl named Kendra decides to teach him a lesson about what is truly important in life. She takes away his good looks, which he values dearly, and turns him into a beast. This spell can only be undone if Kyle can fall in love with someone who loves him back for who he is and does not love him for his appearance or money. Kyle’s father abandons him because he is ashamed to be seen with Kyle. Kyle’s anger from the situation makes him have more hatred towards others than he had before. This contributes to the main conflict because Kyle’s arrogance and hatred towards others are what causes Kendra to turn him into a beast. If he cannot get past that and mature, then he will not be able to break her spell. However, with the help of Will, his tutor, and Magda, his maid, Kyle is able to mature into a compassionate and caring person. One day Kyle says to Kendra “‘Help Will see again, and bring Magda’s family here, or send her there, at least, for a vacation’” (Flinn 147). This shows that Kyle has come a long way from the egoistic person he once was to the caring and compassionate person he is now because he truly cares for Will and Magda. This all contributes to the development of the conflict because although Kyle has matured, he is now stuck with a beastly appearance that prevents him from going out in public without petrifying others. Therefore, he struggles to find someone he can love, which creates a tremendous issue for him because if he does not accomplish this he will be a beast
