Passion, Desire, Lust, Affection. All of the following mean one thing, Love. The textbook definition of love is an intense feeling of deep affection towards something or someone. Love is often described as one of the greatest emotions one can feel, One of the greatest playwrights, William Shakespeare, has to this day left the world stunned with his creative ideas of what Love may be. In the book/play “Much Ado About Nothing,” the main two couples are seen to be in love. Although, from personal perspective only one couple have portrayed the different forms of Love, that is Beatrice & Benedick. At first, many say Beatrice & Benedick are best described as frenemies and live to only hate the opposite gender. In the character descriptions as shown on Page VII, Benedick was first described as a “Woman Hater” and swore to never marry. Meanwhile, Beatrice was given the description of a “Man Hater” and also swore to never marry. Furthermore, In Act 1, as the guests and fellow soldiers of the Prince arrive at Leonato’s House, Beatrice asks of Benedick and describes him with a certain choice of words. “He set up his bills here in Messina, and challenged/ Cupid at the flight; and my uncle’s fool, reading the/ challenge, subscribed for Cupid and challenged him/ at the bird-bolt. I pray you, how many hath he killed/ and eaten in these wars? But how many hath he/ killed? For indeed I promised to eat all of his killing” (Shakespeare, 2.) Further explaining, Beatrice was saying Benedick was known as a “Cupid” wherever he went, the Cupid was known as the God of Love. She implied that he was a player and “ate” all his killing by playing with innocent women’s hearts and soon breaking them. Claudio teases Benedick with, …..” As well as Hero and her gentlewoman help Beatrice realize that she is also in love with Benedick, when she says that she may have a “stomach ache” when in reality it is love. Margaret says,....” While some may argue that Claudio begins to feed Benedick these thoughts, that Beatrice actually likes him in order for him to feel a certain way towards her. Whilst the horrors of the accusable Hero scandal had been going on, Beatrice & Benedict had thought as to why they felt the ache in their heart, which was a for of affection or love towards one another. Beatrice had finally professed that she had already given all her heart to Benedick and none was left to give. I personally believed that it was a time when Beatrice could be open around Benedick and it caused her to actually confess, believing that with one that you may be in love with, you feel safe around them.
