Beauty In Katie Makkai's Poem 'Pretty'

“ I know who I am. I am not perfect. I’m not the most beautiful women in the world.But I’m one of them.” once said Mary j. Blige. Today many young girls ask the question “ Will I be pretty?” and “ Will I be wanted” such as Katie Makkai asked her mother one day in her poem “ Pretty”. In society, we are raised on the notation that beauty is the only asset that a women has to offer to the world but, that is wrong women are intelligent, creative and extraordinary people in the whole sense of the word beauty. The word pretty is connected to many issues that affect women today, it causes insecurities to rise in teenagers and young women today as well as lower self esteem and confidence in themselves. When their self confidence and self-esteem are lower they will go to fall lengths to change themselves to become this so called “ pretty women” that is approved by society.

In Katie Makkai poem “ Pretty” she said “ “Will I be wanted? Worthy? Pretty? But puberty left me this funhouse mirror dry add: teeth set at science fiction angles, crooked nose, face donkey-long, and pox-marked” she points out every little imperfect she sees in her appearance and shows her dislike for her image that she has gained from puberty. She is just one of millions of teenage girls who pick out their imperfections instead of embracing that that’s the way they look. The notion of beauty being everything is strengthened by the family because Makkai said “ And the pretty question infects from conception passing blood and breath into cells” meaning that it is passed down into each generation which will make it difficult to break the circle of insecurity based on beauty in women today.
