Women make up over half of the world's’ population. Not only are females more of the population, but they also make the population. There is a lot of work that goes into being a girl, though many of those go unnoticed. Generally, women do not get enough gratitude for everything they do. Girls can become strong and powerful if they have the right mindset and role models. High school students should read novels with a strong female lead to encourage and empower women.

Anita’s family in Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez has an unimaginable bond. Living in the Dominican Republic, they all have to stick together and trust one another. Anita is 13 years old and has to undergo an incredible amount of change. One by one, people in her neighborhood leave the country, including many of Anita’s friends. The ones who are always besides Anita in any crisis is her family. They encourage her to move to New York with trusted friends to be safer and live an overall better life, away from the revolution in her country. Anita’s family is a perfect example of the strength certain people can have in one’s life. In a family, everyone wants the best for one another. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the same type of values apply in Lilly’s life. Lilly’s father has anger problems and takes them out on his daughter. Rosaleen, the housekeeper, has had enough of T Ray’s actions and packs up Lilly so that they can run away in the middle of the night. Though Rosaleen is not biologically related to Lilly, she is still a mother figure that encourages and guides Lilly through life. Lilly proves that families are not just people who genetically related, but who encourages a positive demeanor and introduces a drive for success.
