Being culturally competent is important in today’s society due to the continuous changes among our population. New cultures are constantly changing and emerging due to the increase diversity in the United States. It seems difficult to conclude that one person is culturally competent because there is always something new to learn about another culture. By taking the Quality and Culture Quiz (Management Sciences for Health), I realize that there is still a lot be learned about other cultures to be culturally competent. In the following discussion, I will review my test score, evaluate what I have learned about myself and analyze what I can do to enhance my understanding and increase my cultural competency. My quiz score was 12 out of 23 and it made me realize that I was lacking in cultural comprehension. The results are quite alarming because I live and work in a diverse area. The information I gathered was that different cultures benefit from the innovative medical care rather than solely relying on folk healers to prescribe herbal remedies to cure illnesses. I can allow them to use some of their home remedies while in the hospital. My next tactic is to acquire more information on the type of medicinal herbs the patient is using to determine if contraindicated with their prescription medications. Educating patients on the potential side effects of mixing herbal supplements and medications can be detrimental to their health, so they need to notify their physician before starting any new herbal remedy. Overall, I need to have an open-mind on the usage of different cultural remedies that people use as the first line treatment options and not to cast judgment on their choice of healing
