Why High School Needs To Start Later How many of you feel like you are not getting enough sleep during school days? Personally, ever since my high school experience begun, I have fallen asleep in class countless times, and it has only been getting worse. The reason is obvious: the start time of high school is just simply too early, and students are not receiving the sleep their bodies require - that needs to be changed. High school must start at a later time in order to fulfill student’s need for adequate sleep, this is because accommodations are needed for the naturally delayed biological clocks of students during adolescence, sleep deprivation needs to be curtailed since it impairs a student’s basic learning ability, and studies show academic …show more content…
Some say that there will be more costs for the taxpayers to cover if districts arranges more buses and drivers to sustain the later start time; some say that sport associated students will have less time to cope with sport practices. However, both of these problems are solvable. There will be no extra cost for taxpayers if the buses schedule is only flipped. Elementary school can be scheduled for the earlier start time, while the high school start time can be shifted to the later time slot. Since most children’s biological clocks have little differences from adults’, they are able to wake up at an earlier time and still be energetic and ready for education. On the other hand, a delayed start time of school actually benefits the athletes more than it harms. “It is well known that sleep deprivation and sleep disturbance can impair mental and physical function, immune response and other restorative processes important for athletes” (Sleivert 1), says Dr. Gordon Sleivert, former Vice President of Canadian Sport Centre Pacific in the article Sleep Your Way to a Better Performance.
