Imagine waking up to gunshots and cannon blasts every few seconds, in the fields behind your home. Writing a goodbye letter to your first born child, knowing that the possibilities of returning home are slim to none. Hearing the cries and screams of your best friend that just got shot by an approaching British soldier. That is what every heroic man of the American Revolutionary War had to go through on a day to day basis; including Benjamin Martin, a character played by Mel Gibson in the movie, The Patriot. Although there are many war veterans that directly represent Benjamin Martin, the three that represent this hero the best are Andrew Pickens, Francis Marion and Nathanael Greene.
Andrew Pickens, a man of authority and power known as “The Wizard Owl”. He represents Benjamin Martin with striking similarities. Pickens quits the War but later rejoined after his property was destroyed by British troops. Martin had the thoughts of quitting and returning home to his remaining family after his son Gabriel died. He thought there is nothing worth fighting for anymore, so why continue. However, he realized he had to return and give the British

Marion went through hell during the Revolutionary War, just like Martin. Both Marion and Martin were the ones who organized the militia to fight the enemy. Each unit consisted of twenty to seventy men who fought without pay. Motivation came from their families back home and honoring their country's name. In addition, Marion had a nephew killed in the war named Gabriel, where Martin’s son named Gabriel was killed during the Revolutionary War. Nothing drives a father more than defending their children. Both men had structures of theirs burned down by the British; Marion’s plantation was torched while Martin’s home was burned from helping wounded soldiers regain their ability to fight again. Alive during the same time period, Marion and Martin relate heavily to “The Fighting Quaker”, Nathanael
