The ancient poem of “Beowulf” has many modern adaptations but compared with each other they have many differences. Although the plot of the 2007 “Beowulf” movie shows a little more details of the story than the poem itself, the characters’ actions and personalities are very different. The characters don’t follow every part of the heroic code which includes strength, courage, and hospitality. It is certain that the value of loyalty as not upheld in the movie as most of Hrothgar’s and Beowulf’s men are not loyal and the characteristic of ceremoniousness in women is actually kept quite well in the movie as the queen keeps the men in the mead hall entertained with song. The characters’ upheaval of the heroic code in both the epic and the movie are both very different.

In the poem women are not mentioned as much as they are in the movie but it does mention them and often go into depth with Wealhtheow’s character. Wealhtheow shows ceremony in the movie by entertaining Beowulf and his men in the mead hall through song and serving mead out of the Hrothgar’s precious golden torque hoping to establish brotherly bonds between the Geats and Danes. The movie helps to show what the role of women is back in the world of Beowulf which is mainly men. In the poem Wealhtheow shows her complete trust in Beowulf as the Danes protector when she offers the cup to him with the same amount of respect as she did the king. Although women obviously do not hold the role as men do in the epic of the hero Beowulf, they still show quite a lot of characteristics in the way of
