Shield, armour, sharp gleaming swords...What does this remind you of? Does it remind you of strong, powerful warriors? These are all the words that describe the great Geat leader, Beowulf. In Beowulf’s life, the moments which stood out are when he fought in the three battles. Although Beowulf fought in the battles for fame, eternal glory, to prove himself worthy and to show pride in his name, throughout the battles his perspective changed and as he developed and started to become a true hero as he fought, bravely and fearlessly, for the protection of his people.
The first question that comes to everyone's’ mind is, ‘Is Beowulf really a hero?’. This can be debatable, for in the Beowulf wanted the fame and glory. For example when the mighty Beowulf is in his second battle with Grendel's upset mother, he used Hrunting, his weapon that he believes will help him through the battle. Although he has his flaws like every other epic hero, his name will be known forever. His courage and bravery stood out through all his battles. Even though he wanted fame and glory, we also wanted to protect everyone. With the help of God, he was destined to do great things, and his name was to be known for eternity. Beowulf is a powerful character, who will never be forgotten. Everything he has done for the people will be remembered. Even when he is dead, the people will know that he is still with them, at heart. He has proved that age and and fear can’t get in the way of anyone's efforts. Beowulf is a warrior defined by his determination, courage and everlasting bravery. “No better king had ever lived, no price so mild, no man so open to his people, so deserving of praise” (Raffel 3183).
