Beowulf - Part 1
The Danish Court and the Raids of Grendel
 Hrothgar has a hall that sits on top of a hill; it’s close to heaven and god.
 Grendel had killed 30 Danes in the hall, he came when they were drunk and sleeping.
 Hrothgar has no equal, he is a peerless hero.
 Grendel doesn’t touch Hrothgar.
The Coming of Beowulf
 Beowulf has a ship built for him
 He helps the people, the people love him but they understood why he wants to go
 Took one day to get there
 Hrothgar is saying how you dare come on my land without permission.
 Beowulf and gang is arrogant
 They have never seen a man like Beowulf before
 They needed their birth/breeding, and what country they were from for him

 They march to castle, and are stopped by soldiers of Hrothgar, they have never seen such soldiers
 Doesn’t think there a threat
 Wulfgar – Danes, Wulfgar and Beowulf were “Measuring Manhood”
 Beowulf can help them, he has the strength of 30 men
 They let them in but no weapons allowed
 Beowulf is arrogant, telling them he is a seasoned warrior
 Grendel is powerful for Beowulf and men
 Had a celebration for Beowulf
Beowulf Slay’s Grendel
 Beowulf and his men are only people in the hall.
 All the men think there not going home, think they are all going to die
 They came with Beowulf anyway “Brotherhood”
 Beowulf is the only one awake
 Beowulf waits for Grendel to come to hall
 Grendel ate one of Beowulf’s men, he sacrificed one of his men, he sat there and watched the whole thing
 Grendel is huge compared to Beowulf, but that doesn’t stop him
 Beowulf grabs onto Grendel, he wants to run away, but Beowulf won’t let go, his fingers are breaking
 His men try to join in but the swords won’t work on Grendel, he put a spell on them
 Grendel escapes but Beowulf has his arm and lays it out in front of the hall
The Joy of the Danes
 Grendel had left a blood trail from his arm being torn off
 Grendel went to Hell when he died
 Hrothgar has never had anybody do what Beowulf did for him, holds him as his son
 Hrothgar gives treasures to Beowulf
 Beowulf is being humble
The Feast
 Hrothgar thinks the hall is cleaned of evil
 They have a feast
 Gave Beowulf golden armor to take back
 Gave eight horses and gave armor
 While in power be kind to my people too Beowulf says
Beowulf – Part 2
The Troll-Wife Avenges Grendel
 Hrothgar’s men are back sleeping in the hall
 Grendel’s mother comes- get no peace
 She’s not as strong as Grendel, but she has strength
 She takes Hrothgar’s best man
 Beowulf and men weren’t in the hall
 She takes Grendel’s claw and brings it back to the den
 Hrothgar can only offer treasure to Beowulf for going to kill Grendel’s mom
Beowulf Slays the Toll-Wife
 She knows they are coming for her
 She had hung AEschere’s head on a stick (like how they hung Grendel’s claw up on wall in the hall)
 They see all the sea-monsters over the cliff
 Beowulf kills the sea-monster (show-off)
 Gave him the Hrunting sword to make sure he is safe
 All the treasure goes back to his king if he doesn’t live
 He gets attacked by other monster while Grendel’s mom is pulling him down
 Can breathe under water in Grendel’s mom house
 Sees sword on the wall made from the Giants
 He kills Grendel’s mom and a light shines
 He takes Grendel’s head
 Hrothgar and his men see blood so they leave thinking Beowulf’s dead
 Beowulf’s men stay behind longer
Beowulf Returns to Heorot
 It took four men to carry Grendel’s head back
 Hrothgar and men have a party funeral for all of Beowulf
