Nobody is perfect. In dictionary.com a hero is defined as “a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character; a warrior-chieftain of special strength, courage, or ability.” Beowulf put his community first and protected them during the 12 winters of torture. Everyone makes mistakes because nobody is perfect. Being a hero involves being royal, strong, lacking fear, and qualities of a leader. Every hero has their flaws within themselves; being too confident, relying on fate, and doing everything for fame. Everyone was scared of the darkness. During the day, everything was fine; music was playing, people were singing and dancing, but when night hit, everyone feared the monster that attacked at night when everyone was sleeping. His reason to battle was to get fame. He was protecting his homeland, but only to have the community look up to him. This is one of his weaknesses. He wanted everyone to realize his victories, that is why he brought home Grendel’s arm for appraisal. Beowulf might have fought Grendel’s mom just to brag. He got himself into battles that did not need to be fought. When Beowulf fought, he relied on fate. Fate is not always correct. Sometimes fate could be on his side or sometimes it may not be. When relying on fate, Beowulf could not make his decisions independently. Fate can decide the future, but being Beowulf being the final decision shows what comes from within. Beowulf is a hero, but not a perfect one. Everyone makes mistakes, but how they learn from it is what makes them stronger. Everyone shows weaknesses which is human. Beowulf was loyal to his community, determined to protect them, strong, and brave, but also selfish when it came to battles, relying heavily on fate and not making his own decisions, and mostly participating in battles to gain
