Happiness is not present constantly, there will be times where people are miserable and/or angry. The people in Brave New World are conditioned to be happy; emotions however, can not be stopped because they are parts human mentality and character. Not everyone is happy in the World State’s society. Babies are conditioned from birth to be happy but they have failed due to human emotions being mixed with synthetic birthing. Bernard Marx is unhappy because most of society does not understand him, he feels like a social outcast. People have started rumors about him such as, ““They say he doesn’t like Obstacle Golf… And then he spends most of his time by himself-alone.” There was horror in Fanny’s voice.” (Huxley 45). The Savage Reservation looked very promising, however, Bernard’s unusual behavior kind of shoves her away even she looks at him as handsome. Bernard’s strange behavior shocks Lenina and she is upset for him because he’s not like the average joe. Lenina says to Bernard, “ It’s horrible, it’s horrible… And how can you talk like that about not wanting to be part of the social body?” (Huxley 91). Bernard’s idea of a date is extremely unorthodox and Lenina would rather do something more lively, causing her to be upset. Bernard scares her in the helicopter ride by showing her the true face of mother nature. Lenina is scared by it but Bernard likes it. Bernard’s strange behavior and mentality towards Lenina makes her feel upset about him. Unhappiness is inevitable no matter how happy a person can be. The dystopian society that has extreme conditioning can not stop human emotion and therefore, has people who feel different. Humans are filled with many types of emotions and personalities no matter how many experiments and teachings that have been given. That is the reason why they are what they
