In the novel Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, Bernard Marx is an important character in the shaping the story. Bernard is an Alpha Plus and has been a part of the World State his whole life, so he understands how people of that society live. Although he knows what life is like in the World State, he is very different from all of the others and he is not a trustworthy or desirable friend. In the novel, Bernard is lucky enough to get to take the savage around the State and show him what is it like to live there. But in the end, he acts like he is over everyone else because of his relationship with the savage. Bernard is special in this book because he is not like all of the others who are complete clones of one another. Fanny is nervous about Lenina going out with him because of his reputation. They all hear that when Bernard was being fertilized, they messed him up "'they say somebody made a mistake when he was still in the bottle-thought he was a gamma and put alcohol into his blood-surrogate. This was mainly because he was chosen to take the savage John around the World State. Everyone wanted to see the savage and newcomer so they would love seeing Bernard because then they could see the savage. The savage was interesting and something new to the people. But once Bernard felt this power and knew people liked him, he became arrogant. People started to not want to see the savage if it meant they didn't have to see Bernard. The people were completely over Bernard when he promised them the savage, but he never showed him to them "they duly ate, but ignored him; drank and were either rude to his face or talked to one another about him, loudly and offensively, as though he had not been there" (Huxley 175).
