Why do people betray? What leads them to be so desperate to hurt a person? These ideas of betrayal are explored throughout the play Fences and the book Song of Solomon. Fences by August Wilson is a story about a family set in the 1950s family struggling to financially get by, while having to deal with racism. The book Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison follows a family over a span of thirty years describing the many difficulties the members of the family face. Betrayal occurs in many different ways throughout the stories, but the most predominant is selfishness. An individual will selfishly betray a person when they are trying to escape from life, by ignoring what people have done for them and anothers needs.
