Betta Fish Lab

While Biology Honors is famous for the fruit flies, AP Biology is famous for the bunnies. Not as well known, are the Siamese fighting fish and crickets.

Activities in AP Bio are very hands on. So far, the class has tested the transpiration of leaves, dug around on Rocky Hill to peek at soil communities, estimated the number of leaf blades in the quad by taking samples, gone on an ecology hike in Manoa, baked bread, tested acid rain's influence on bodies of water, and, last but not least, made cheese.

It's a class worth taking, if not for the expansive and engaging labs, than for the promise of working with live animals.

The most well known of the live animal labs, is the bunny lab. The lab's objective is to mate bunnies together and try to predict the offspring's traits–ear flop, coat color and coat texture–through genetics. Betta fish are notorious for their aggressive reactions to other male betta. The purpose of the lab is to design and carry out an experiment that will lead to conclusions as to which stimuli the betta instinctually reacts to.

Another live animal lab–actually more like insect lab–is the cricket breeding. Basically, the experiment is to artificially select for certain traits. After a few generations, there should be an average increase in whatever trait is being selected for: length, width, pale coloration, dark coloration, longer antennae, etc.
