In Two ways to belong in America, a personal essay by Bharati Mukherjee, when the girls first came to America, they planned on enduring their two years in America, secure their degrees, then return to India to marry the groom of their father’s choosing; which was all part of their culture. Mira instead married an Indian student and Bharati married a fellow American student, of Canadian percentage. Mira wanted to stay true to her culture by retiring and returning home to her Indian citizenship.
