1. Discuss the issues of bias and prejudices as they apply to the counseling relationship and acceptance of individual differences. How do you feel this will be an issue for you in your work? Bias and prejudices can affect the counseling relationship is a negative way. The relationship between a client and a counselor is delicate. If a client feels judged by a counselor, this can cause many negative consequences including but not limited to the client quitting counseling. It is imperative that the counselor see the client in a positive regard. The issue of bias and prejudices will be a hard obstacle as I begin working as a counselor. The counselor and the client both bring cultural values, beliefs and bias to the therapeutic relationship. Equality amongst cultures needs to be something the counselor needs to be aware. Each culture must be treated the same so preserve the counselor-client relationship. As a counselor, I will need to be sure that I am aware of my client’s beliefs and cultures. I need to be understanding, non-judgmental, and compassionate to my clients no matter the cultural differences that may be present. This would mean I hold the client in a positive regard and offer a counseling plan tailored to fit their own needs, not my own agenda.
