Substitution is the means of taking the place of something else. Christ's death on the cross was a form of substitution because he took our place by dying for our sins. Christ's death was our substitution so that we wouldn't pay the price of death and our sins were forgiven.

Finally, the death of Christ was a legal act. Sin is breaking the law of God and Christ's substitutionary atonement was a satisfaction of the law of God.
