Often imagination has the power to transform reality into a better story, which can make a boring story more interesting. Both the novel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel and the film Big Fish directed by Tim Burton explore the topic of the power of the imagination. Each work reveals the power of the imagination to convert “dry yeast less factuality into a better story” (Martel 70). Real stories Firstly, Yann Martel through the character of Pi Patel and Tim Burton, through the character of Edward Bloom, show how dry yeast less factuality is not very inspiring. In Life of Pi, after hearing Pi’s story, investigators change their point of view. When Pi ask the investigators, “Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?' Mr. Okamoto: 'That's an interesting question?' Mr. Chiba: 'The story with animals.' Mr. Okamoto: 'Yes. The story with animals is the better story.' Pi Patel: 'Thank you.” (Martel 352). This quote demonstrates that the imagination can convert a dry yeast less factuality to a better story and can change the perspectives of people who only believe in the real stories. Additionally, the investigators only believe in plain facts and do not believe the better story before the interview started, but when they were asked to choose, they choose the better story over the real story. Also, Will changed his perspective at the end of the movie. Will says to Edward, “I have no idea who you are because you have never told me a single fact.” (Burton) This quote demonstrate that Will does not believe stories that Edward tells, but just dry yeast less facts. But towards the end of the movie, when Will’s father was in the hospital and when he asked him to tell the story of how he dies. Will also make an imaginative story which shows his changing perspective. Furthermore, Will also embraced storytelling and tell his father’s stories to his son. This shows that the better story can change the point of view of the people who only believe
