Bilbo Baggins Character Analysis

Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit at approximately fifty years of age. He is a wealthy hobbit who is not known to have any adventures whatsoever and at the begging of the novel he is as ordinary as they come in Hobbiton. When Gandalf finds him he is very reluctant to leave is warm hobbit-hole and it takes a spell of his Tookish side to accept the role of burglar in hopes that he can have an adventure like the ones in songs of the dwarves. Still divided on his decision to leave the shire, Bilbo departs with the dwarves and Gandalf on this unexpected adventure. By the time Bilbo encounters the first dangers of his adventure, he has already accepted and executed his roll as a burglar. After finally reaching the Lonely Mountain the dwarves are ready to give up at the first sign of failure. Bilbo rallies them and finds a way into the mountain. His final act as a burglar is to go into the lair of the dragon alone and with no way of defending himself. In this scene Bilbo wrestles with his overwhelming fear and eventually is triumphant, this is a huge turning point in Bilbo's character in the book and shows his more daring state of mind in the end of chapter 14. Bilbo in the end of the book makes a decision to save many lives and turns the precious Arkenstone over to Bard and the lake-men who are supposed to be their enemy but Bilbo has learned to see through that and focus on what really matters. He then uses an unfounded skill in speech to unify the three armies( the dwarves, the lake-men and the wood elves), thus preventing any unnecessary bloodshed between them,changing the outcome of the book and the history of middle earth. This, to me, is the ultimate showcase of bravery in the book and Bilbo's biggest triumph. I think most readers would agree that Bilbo Baggins has come a long way to reach where is now near the end of his journey in chapter
