The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, a book for fantasy adventure lovers, tells the tale of a quiet hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, whose life is changed when he meets thirteen dwarves. Hobbits are beardless, half the size of humans, and love to eat. Bilbo Baggins lives in a comfortable hole in the ground called Bag End. Bilbo’s quiet life changes when he is approached by an old wizard named Gandalf. Bilbo finds himself on an unforeseen journey when Gandalf introduces him to twelve dwarves and their leader Thorin. The dwarves need Bilbo’s assistance as a burglar to reclaim Thorin’s treasure from the dragon. Bilbo Baggins is the protagonist and the most important character of the book. Bilbo is a round character who changes the most throughout the book. In the first chapter, when Bilbo is introduced he is a quiet unadventurous hobbit. The many challenges he faced throughout the story slowly changed his character. The more challenges Bilbo won the more confident he became. Bilbo was very confident when he went into Smaug’s liar and barely escaped in chapter 12. By the end of the story he is confident, happy, and loves adventures. I enjoyed the overall message of the book but not how it was presented. I enjoy supernatural elements in books. I prefer the books I read to not to have trolls, goblins, or giant spiders. It would have been better if it did not have so many supernatural beings that usually do not interact with each other. It would have been better if the creatures went together. In The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe the supernatural the characters were unique as well but they all fit together. The Hobbit and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe both have story lines of hero versus villains and in both several villains die and at least one of the heroes die.
