Bilbo's Transformation In The Hobbit

All literary characters undergo some form of transformation and maturation. All characters change throughout their journey. The book I will be discussing is The Hobbit by J.R.R Toilken. This book is about the adventure of Bilbo Baggins and how he has changed as a person. When comparing Bilbo’s behaviour in the beginning and end of the story you can see how his views on the world and people have changed. The three supporting arguments I will be discussing in my essay will be when Bilbo encounters Gollum , when he frees himself from the spiders and lastly when he distracted Smaug so he could find his week spot.

He went from being a boring, nervous and delicate/sensitive hobbit, to being a daring, brave and courageous hero. When comparing Bilbo’s behaviour from the beginning to end of the story you can see all the changes he undergoes. His encounter with Gollum made him become confident. When he battled the spiders, he showed growth in bravery and courage. His conversation with Smaug showed bravery and confidence. He got out of his hobbit hole and into the world beyond is home and experienced the unexpected and unpredictable. Those things and adventures are what shaped Bilbo. Maturity is when you start thinking about the purpose of your life, it is when you start considering the situation of the ones at the other end. Maturity is the ability to stick to a job and overcome the obstacles that are thrown along your way, it’s when you endure discomfort, pain and frustration but in the end, you overcome that and succeed. You can see Bilbo matured because he endured so much throughout his quest (pain, hunger, discomfort and his fears) and in the end, he accomplished his goal because he never gave
