Although we drew and read from seemingly childlike novels, Bill’s gruff nature and coarse personality made sure everyone was paying complete and utter attention. From the first day of school to the last, the expectation in Bill’s class emphasized the characteristics of hard work and honesty. Bill may have been my teacher from 4th to 6th grade, but I ended up getting much more from that class than that. Bill Scattaregia was a veteran at Kentucky Avenue School; he began working for the McEwan School in 1981, which eventually was replaced by the aforementioned Kentucky Avenue School. However, if you disrespected him or another one of your classmates, then you deserve everything that’s coming towards you.

Furthermore, in Bill’s class, you would spend a majority of your time in Bill’s room, learning about literature, science, math, and everything in between. If you asked him a question about any topic, he would almost always know the answer. Bill may have been a teacher for intermediate grades, but he would push you to your limits; thanks to him, I discovered my love for mathematics and advanced myself past my preconceived barriers.

Not only did Bill teach us classical education, but he took his own approach on certain teaching skills as well. If we finished our work during one of our subjects, he urged us to bring out our projects. Our projects were models of shapes and flags that we were required to create. I still cherish the various tetrahedrons and icosahedrons that I created in his class. I failed to see his reasoning back then, but now I realize that those projects were used to teach us a strong work ethic; an ethic that I still use
