According to Stoggill (1948) leaders possess no specific traits that separate them from others that are not leaders. One can possess leadership qualities in one area but may mot in other. This is considered the trait approach. Inclusive in the trait approach are five major leadership traits that a leader should aspire to if they would like to consider themselves a leader. Those traits are, determination, intelligence, integrity, self-confidence, and sociability.
As I think intelligence and determination, I am reminded of my former boss, Billy Joe McCain. Mr. McCain was the Executive Director for the Bolivar County Community Action Agency (BCCAA). BCCAA is an agency that provides a variety of services with clientele ranging from preschool children to the elderly, comprised of 30 plus programs and overseeing over 500 employees. The mission of the agency is to improve the well-being of low-income individuals and families and assist them in becoming self-sufficient. Billy J. McCain was a leader determined to elevate the poverty-stricken areas in the Mississippi Delta and place poverty issues in the forefront. If a leader says that he would do something, followers want be able to count on them to do just that. This trait is especially important because leaders will inspire trust amongst his followers if they are exhibiting honesty and trustworthiness. An occupation that I feel that integrity is very important in is that of a Pastor. Each and every Sunday, a Pastor goes before the church professing what “thus saith the Lord.” However, it becomes almost detrimental to the church as well as the life of the follower if that Pastor is somehow caught up in some immoral scandal.
