My secondary source, “birdsong,” was written by Sebastian faulks after the war, about what happened before men went over the top into no man’s land. This source not only tells me how men prepared themselves for attack but helps me understand what the men thought and felt before attack. My first piece of evidence from the text is where it says “stephen on his knees, some men taking photographs from their pockets, kissing the faces of their wives and children.” This shows me that the men prepared themselves for attack by praying to god for luck or thinking about what they have waiting at home if they win the war. Their religion, family and friends are what gave most of the men desire to win. Another piece of evidence is where it says “then came the rum, and talk began again. Men drank greedily. Some of the younger boys staggered and laughed. . .” this text is very useful because it tells us that this was a sort of last laugh and they knew they were going to die so they made jokes and gave themselves a good memory or moment of happiness before they go over the top, after all the expectancy to live was a one in three chance.
On the night before attack every soldier was anxious and nauseated with worry and stress over what could happen in the morning. I know this is true because in the text it says “it was night time but no man slept . . .” this piece of the text tells me that all the men were thinking the exact same thing that they could die in the morning, their minds were set
