Teaching and Learning Color Consciousness in Black Families: Exploring Family Process and Women’s Experiences With Colorism
In the black community family is a powerful entity. Family is symbolic of “survival, kinship, and society” (Wilder). In the black community, parents do their best to keep their children shielded from outside extremes. Extremes like racism. Most parents practice racial socialization with their children to promote independence and high self-esteem. The family culture is where an individual’s heritage is taught and celebrated.
Colorism is also practiced in black homes. Colorism is “an interracial system of inequality based on skin color, hair texture, and facial features that bestows privilege and value on physical attributes that are closer to white” (Wilder). This concept has persisted throughout time in the black community. Blacks have advance from their harsh beings but have yet to overcome this …show more content…
How family’s practice socialization is different across communities but each community practice involves addressing race. Parent’s parenting skills usually reflect the experiences they have went through and what they deem important. Black families acknowledge the history of slavery and in the same work to teach responsibility and achievement. Parents tend to fight back against negative stereotypes portrayed by the media.
Feminist believe when it comes to the topic of motherhood colored women have been left out. Parenting is extremely different for a black mother from low income versus a white mother from middle class. In black communities, motherhood is associated with strength and power (Wilder). White norms categorize motherhood as an activity or occupation (Wilder). An act that is only cultivated in the home. Parenting under black women is often a shared experience.
