Introduction: Social media has a hand in a great deal of today’s current events and issues. My topic is about how Black Lives Matter turned from a seventeen character tweet to an entire movement through the power of social media. Furthermore, I will also be speaking on whether that same force, which started their campaign, is effective outside of the web. With a major in social media marketing and a minor in social impact, I have great interest in how the two combined can move the world toward a positive change. In addition, what sparked my curiosity is the impact that Black Lives Matter has made both, domestically and globally. Often, skeptics of social media’s impact argue that social media has slowed action within the “real world,” as well as believing social media activism is not effective, but rather is a facade. Therefore, I am eager to uncover if these skeptics are correct in their thinking or if they do not give the platform social media has enough credit in today’s technological world. The real question is: Is Black Lives Matter just a hashtag or is a movement working toward social change? That is what I want to discover. Regarding the textbook readings, I believe the in-class discussion of Neil Postman’s “The Judgement of Thamus” left me wondering if his notion could apply to social media-created social movements. Postman raises the idea that technology, is not only a burden, but rather it is both a burden and a blessing. I look forward to digging deeper into these “burdens” and “blessings” Black Lives Matter may possess, and finding out which of these two options comes to be more prominent within society.
